Unmanned US aircraft fired missile at Iraqi insurgents on April 11:
"A Predator MQ-1 aircraft fired a Hellfire missile at those preparing to attack Balad Air Base on April 11, a day after a US airman was killed and two others wounded in a mortar attack, it said in a statement from Qatar.
The crew controlling the unmanned aircraft were cued to look for Iraqi insurgents in a field near the base,' the statement said.
'Using their targeting pod, they located the enemy team just as a weapon was launched toward the base. The UAV crew obtained clearance to respond from the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) as the insurgents separated and ran,' it added.
'While following the insurgents and gaining permission to engage, another mortar was fired,' he said.
'The TOC granted clearance before the insurgents were able to fire a third round and the crew launched a Hellfire missile, scoring a direct hit on the target,' the Air Force said.
'Predator crews from Balad AB were again successful on April 12 when they struck multiple insurgents with close air support from F-16s,' it said."
